The Yemen humanitarian crisis has been listed by UNICEF as the largest emergency in the world. Many families were affected by the war; thousands of lives were claimed, millions of people on the brink of starvation, and of those people on the brink of starvation there are children who are developing life-threatening severe acute malnutrition. Almost 2.4 million children that are under the age of FIVE are malnourished. To spread awareness on this crisis, Divisions 11 and 31 and Emerald KIWINS collaborated to create a video and used Sign Language as our form of communication to spread awareness on not only the humanitarian crisis but deaf culture as well.

In this service project, participants were given a line that they would have to sign. Participants had to use youtube, google, and/or sign school to translate it into ASL and they would record a video of the signed phrase to submit. Morse had two participants, Me and our outstanding member, Naya Flordeliza. When I asked Naya about what it was like to participate in this service event, her response was, “I was excited hearing about this service event, as I have always been interested in learning ASL! For me, it was fun learning a wide range of words and phrases, as well as recording myself :) Learning a new language is very beneficial and learning ASL made me feel good about myself. I’m continuing to expand my ASL vocabulary to communicate with those that are deaf or hard of hearing!”
